Kumon is Life
"I have climbed one of the highest mountains in my life and I have survived."
- 13 years old (2nd Year High School)
My Kumon experience has been nothing short of an uphill climb. It entailed a nitty gritty determination, one I never thought I had in me. Worksheet after worksheet and question after question required me to dig deeper and find a different kind of strength. Kumon made me find a new person--a new Marc. This new Marc would always find ways to solve every equation and every problem; he would go to any extent to do so. I’m happy that I found him because he is a better mathematician and a better person as well.
My low starting point was something I had never really given much attention to. After all, you have to start somewhere; no one climbs to the top from the middle of the peak. You have to start at the bottom. As the saying goes, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” I support the low starting point because it helps students to reach for the skies to achieve the unachievable and reach the unreachable.
In this endeavor, I have realized one thing: Kumon is life. Life can build you or break you. This program can cause you to rip the hairs off your head and to give up. The problems can beat you down to the point of mental exhaustion or fluster you to the point of frustration.
But as in life, there are solutions; there are ways to climb the hurdle. However, the road was not easy. I stumbled, fell, and scraped my knees. Nevertheless, the desire to finish kept me going. I decided that no hurdle was too difficult to overcome and nothing could prevent me from finishing the program.
And as I write this essay, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I feel that I have climbed one of the highest mountains in my life and I have survived. I will use this accomplishment as a means to improve myself, my country, and the people around me. Math is more than just numbers; it is everything we see: our computers, our cars, and even the arithmetic or geometric increase in our population. With the strong foundation that Kumon has provided me, I will go to college knowing that I can and will succeed in my applied mathematics course. I will use my education to lift this country into a breath of fresh air.
I will always be thankful that Kumon has been my partner. Kumon always will be my great teacher. It did not only teach me the life in math but it has inspired me to use mathematics in so many ways.
