5 ways you can help your child learn about themselves

belleperez

Self-actualization is important for a child because they become confident to learn about others when they know themselves.

As an adult, you know the importance of self-actualization. You know what it is like to find the one thing you are talented in and how satisfying it is to work on something you enjoy. And as a parent, your child’s journey to self-actualization is now your adventure, too. After all, you want them to find their passion and make the most of what life has to offer them.

But you might be asking, ”How can I help my child on their journey to self-actualization?” Just remember that the answer is simple: Not alone. With your help, your child could be on his or her way without even realizing it.

1. Create a positive and curious environment

Your child is likely still discovering different activities and disciplines that he or she could excel at. It would benefit your child to grow in an environment that allows exploration. Try not to discourage something just because it is not traditional, or because you do not understand it. Instead, encourage their adventurous spirit.

Know that this environment will be effective if your child sees that it applies to all family members— from parents and guardians to siblings.

2. When you see potential, encourage your child

Let your child feel your support in whatever activity or thing they may be interested in, no matter how big or small. Photo source: Envato Elements

While your child may show strength in something that you cannot help them with, it is still important that you show encouragement. When they draw or paint a picture, hang it up on the refrigerator. When they learn a new song, ask them to sing it and maybe even get them to teach you. When they finish their math exercise quickly, celebrate with them.

3. Establish authority

As parents, it is important to balance allowing your child certain liberties to grow while also teaching them to respect your authority as parents. Photo source: Envato Elements

While curiosity is important in your child’s self-actualization journey, he or she must not forget who the authority is. Put firm boundaries wherever needed, like limiting their screen time or asking for permission before taking things from the pantry, office space, or toy shelf. By establishing a level of authority, your child will understand that while he or she cannot act on their own accord, there is still a level of freedom that allows them to be themselves.

4. Offer acceptance

As young as they are, teach your child that they will not always be good at everything, but that does not mean that they should not try. Photo source: Envato Elements

No one is good at every single thing; each child has their own set of strengths and finds different things a little challenging. As much as you celebrate their successes, make sure they know that it is okay not to be great at everything they try. Providing and positively instilling your acceptance will help your child know that weaknesses need not be weaknesses; they are just avenues that can always be further developed.

5. Extend it beyond the family

There is no doubt that a stable, safe, and encouraging household can help a child in their journey to self-actualization, but a child’s growth is not limited to the walls of his or her home. So when it comes to considering the external environments you put your child in, attempt to always align with your values.Look into schools and after-school programs like Kumon that may help instill lessons and values that your child can take with him or her in their years beyond school. Work with environments that help foster independence, confidence, and curiosity. While self-actualization is a topic you do not hear too often, it does not mean you shy away from it. As a parent with a goal to develop his or her child, you can always explore ways to make sure that your little one grows up in an encouraging environment, both internal and external, that will allow them to achieve their full potential

25 years of nurturing Filipinos’ love for learning

belleperez

Like most great ideas, this educational program began because parents saw a need for their child and addressed it.

In 1954, a second-grade elementary student named Takeshi Kumon brought home a math test that worried his mother, Teiko Kumon. Teiko then spoke to her husband, Toru Kumon, who happened to be a high school math teacher. To address their son’s problem, Toru began making practice math problems on paper for Takeshi to answer on his own.

With his experience as a teacher and after much trial and error, Toru found the optimal way for his son to learn and practice his lessons—lessons he knew would be used throughout his son’s entire educational journey. These personal worksheets later became the prototype for today’s Kumon worksheets.

Kumon arrives in the Philippines

It was in 1996 when an affiliate company of the Kumon Institute of Education (KIE) officially reached Manila. Kumon Philippines has since expanded its roots in the Philippines, with more than 300 Learning Centers and guiding over 50,000 students through the Kumon Method.

Along with its growing numbers, Kumon Philippines has also experienced several ceremonial wins. Recognizing its efficiency and success, Entrepreneur Philippines awarded Kumon Philippines as one of the Top 15 Fastest Growing Franchising Companies in the Philippines, the Top 5 Outstanding Franchising Companies in the Philippines, and Best in Franchise Support.

The True Testimony of Success

Kumon Philippines alumna Trassandra Jewelle R. Ipapo once penned a testimony of her journey. Here, she talks about the thrill she experienced at the Center, as she enjoyed answering her worksheets and got great scores as a result. But as she advanced to higher levels, she admits reaching a difficult point. With support from her parents, relatives, and teachers, Ipapo eventually pushed through.

Ipapo attests to how Kumon helped her succeed. ”I realized that Kumon gave me the skills I needed to overcome the challenges I faced,” she says. ”Aside from helping me in school, Kumon also opened up many new opportunities for me.”

It was through constant practice and in the learning environment fostered by her Kumon community that allowed Ipapo to thrive, helping her become a full scholar during her senior high school and college years. ”All these would not have been possible had I not taken the Kumon program,” she testifies.

But more than her academic achievements, Ipapo and other Kumon Completers hold the values of perseverance, commitment, independence, and confidence—each one nurtured and strengthened within their own Centers. ”Because of Kumon, not only was I able to become the best version of myself, but I pushed myself to the limits of who I am meant to be.”

Kumon humbly began almost seven decades ago, and Toru Kumon’s original goal of helping his son master academic skills is now being practiced by four million students in over 50 different countries. The Kumon Method has been tried and tested and has provided adults around the globe with the foundation and values they need to reach success—and is continuing to do so for its current roster of young minds.

Kumon Philippines is celebrating 25 years of success in nurturing the love for learning. In celebration of this milestone, they are offering 25% off on tuition fees for new students and those enrolling in a second subject. Visit their website to learn more.

How parents can help their kids with remote learning

belleperez

It appears that this new educational system is here to stay. The question now is, how can parents help their children with distance learning?

When the health crisis first hit and schools started to close their doors, a lot of questions were asked. Parents and teachers were caught off-guard and had numerous concerns about the only available option: online distance learning.

But now that everyone is past the first full academic year, some of those concerns have trickled down from conscious thought—this does not mean, however, that some questions no longer need to be asked.

Here are some questions that every parent should be asking themselves about online distance learning.

1. Is our home prepared?

There are some things that online distance learning requires, and this often includes a stable internet connection and a dedicated device for your child. But before the next school year begins, ask yourself whether or not the tools already available are enough.

Sit down with your children and ask them what they struggled with in the current school year. Was their connection reliable, or would it fall through in the middle of a classroom discussion? Is the device they are using enough or do their projects require more advanced features?

As the school year ends, parents should assess if their current remote learning setup is working for their child, so they can make the necessary adjustments needed before the next one starts.

2. What are my other options?

The default solution with online learning has been to stick with the schools that children were attending pre-pandemic. But with each school approaching remote learning differently, it might pay off to consider other options that might be more effective for your child.

Do not be afraid to dig in a little deeper and have discussions with the school faculty on how they will grade their students, how they plan to approach their lessons, and what platforms they will be using to facilitate their classes. Do the research and have your children join the conversation, too.

3. Is my child keeping up with the school’s new online setup?

Naturally, the number one priority in remote learning is your children. Sit down with them to discuss how they feel about the whole setup. Do they think they are learning and are they able to keep up? Are they getting enough help from their teachers? Are they able to voice their concerns and are their questions properly addressed in and outside of class?

Take all of the answers to heart and make adjustments wherever you think you can. The educational situation might have changed, but learning should not be sacrificed—especially if the difference between effective studies and a lackluster experience might just be a matter of adjusting your child’s schedule to when they feel most able to focus.

4. Am I giving my child enough resources?

If you are looking for a supplementary learning program for your children, the Kumon Method offers to help your child enhance both their academic and ”self-learning” ability.

Teachers are doing their best to provide your children with what they need to properly learn and understand their lessons, but giving your children access to supplementary learning avenues will help them in the long run.

Supplementary learning is available in multiple forms: through educational videos, self-learning, and other educational systems outside of formal school. Look into what is available and what will work best for your child. After all, these supplementary programs will also aid your child in learning and getting the most out of online distance learning.

Despite the trying times, everyone has learned to adapt in however way they can—and students have graduated from their first full year of remote learning. But with face-to-face school still in question, you can never be too prepared to provide your child with the best learning setup possible.

Kumon Philippines celebrates 25 Years of Nurturing the Love for Learning

belleperez

Kumon was born out of a father’s love for his son. In fact, what started as a loving father’s idea of creating learning materials to help his son develop strong calculation skills has turned into a learning method that has helped pursue the potential of students around the world, especially in the Philippines.

In 1954, Mr. Toru Kumon developed the Kumon Program so that his son, Takeshi, could develop the needed skills and abilities to study mathematics with ease. From studying his son’s school materials, he found out that these materials progressed too quickly from one topic to the next. He decided to design his own materials to help his son develop strong calculation skills.

The success of the program was more than what he expected since Takeshi was able to solve problems in differential and integral calculus by sixth grade.

The first-ever Kumon Center was Mr. Toru Kumon’s home.

Considering Takeshi’s evident development and firm in his belief that what was possible for one child is possible for others, Mr. Toru Kumon set out to offer his learning method to as many children as possible – this has become known as the kindness movement. It was a mission he set out to pursue. This also started the growth of the Kumon Method in Japan as the Kumon Institute of Education was established in Osaka, Japan in 1958 with 300 students in 13 Centers.

Kumon reached the Philippines in 1982 as the need for a supplemental learning program that develops students’ academic skills and character increased. The first Kumon Center was opened and handled by a Japanese instructor. As the number of Centers started to increase, Kumon Philippines was formally established on August 15, 1996. Since then, the method has been growing in the country with three branch offices in Makati City, Quezon City, and Cebu City that supports more than 300 Centers and 45,000 students nationwide.

As the company celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2021, Kumon Philippines is happy to share one of its first surprises for the year: The Online New Student Promo Triple Treat.
