Make your most meaningful new year’s resolution as an educator

belleperez

Education as an industry was among the hardest hit by the pandemic. With schools and universities closed down, many students and educators have had difficulty catching up with the rest of the world in using technology to supplement their classes.

Fortunately, supplementary education programs exist and have adapted quite quickly to the post-pandemic ‘new normal.’ None more so than Kumon, one of the most well-established franchises in the Philippines and across the world.

Kumon Philippines, Inc. (KPI) always had the fundamentals of education at its core, as it started out with Toru Kumon, a simple math teacher who hoped to improve his son’s math abilities. When he devised what is now distinctively known as the Kumon Method of Learning, he eventually found success in bringing out the potential of more children, leading him to establish the Kumon Institute of Education in Osaka, Japan, in 1958.

Since then, the Kumon Method has become popular with educators around the world, as millions of Franchisee-Instructors began using it to help children in their learning across different regions of the world. The Kumon franchise now extends to 65 countries, including Australia, India, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, and more. Kumon was established in the Philippines in 1996, where its franchise has grown with over 300 Kumon Centers across the country.

The Kumon Method instills in students the skills and mindset for learning new materials without being directly taught. Being a home-based education system, it has adapted well to the struggles of education during and after the pandemic, as it aims to develop students’ academic ability and independence by introducing new content in a way that enables students to learn without directly being taught.

Making an education business with purpose and potential

Yet, Kumon has become one of the leading names in the education franchising not only because of their effective methods of teaching, but because they have provided and continue to provide top-notch and consistent support needed to build a rewarding career and profitable education business.

Moreover, Kumon further improved its instructor onboarding experience by utilizing recordings of its franchise orientation videos so that applicants can just watch it from home at their convenience.

Kumon Franchisee-Instructors are guaranteed support even before the start of operations, to the setting up of the business, until Centers are operational, and beyond. Helping assure that franchisees can earn from their education business, Kumon provides a well-researched List of Open Areas, showing ideal locations with growth potential.

Finally, Kumon’s main purpose is to help students all over the world unlock their hidden potential, so Kumon Franchisee-Instructors are required to undergo hands-on training under KPI’s Franchise arm to maintain the top-notch quality of the Kumon Method of Learning. This training is not only for the benefit of Kumon’s students however, as it also includes business strategies for owning and operating a Kumon Center. The training is conducted online for the safety and convenience of prospective franchisees.

Kumon’s continued success as the leading afterschool program and education franchise in the Philippines and abroad can be attributed to its reputation in the industry and solid partnership with stakeholders, particularly its current and potential Franchisee-Instructors.

The uniqueness of the Kumon Method makes the franchising, not only a promising and lucrative opportunity, but a meaningful one. The demand for Kumon and its enrollment is year-round, and its programs are long-term. Students stay long-term as they improve and work through the program levels. This uniqueness poses financial stability, builds strong customer loyalty, and stirs a sense of fulfillment for the Franchisee-Instructor.

Most importantly, however, it also allows educators to provide quality, effective, supplementary learning programs to students who need it.

Looking to franchise a business? You can build your own Kumon educational center!

belleperez

As far as franchises go, Kumon is like the educational equivalent of a coffee chain – drive around Metro Manila and you’ll likely run into a Kumon center at one point. After all, the brand has been in the country for more than 25 years and has established around 300 learning centers scattered throughout Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

And despite the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic, the educational franchise continues to adapt and thrive as it pursues its goal of helping children improve their learning habits as well as gain better life skills and character development.

Kumon’s success as a business wouldn’t have been possible without the creation of the Kumon method. The Kumon method doesn’t just teach children about math and reading – it makes children appreciate the process of learning, which is why it has been an effective model.

Instead of spoon-feeding information, the practice gives kids just enough guidance so they can learn and develop self-esteem on their own. It’s a method that focuses on habits and interest rather than memorization.

If you have a passion for learning and teaching, opening your own Kumon learning center might be a good business idea for you. While we encourage you to thoroughly go through your ideas and options, here are some pros to being part of the Kumon network.

Established local and global presence

Kumon is a business that started over six decades ago in Osaka, Japan when its founder Toru Kumon turned a learning method he designed for his son into a business model.

The educational franchise was established in the Philippines 25 years ago, but its reputation is far larger than it seems. In fact, Kumon is present in over 65 countries and regions including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Singapore, and more.

This is a testament not only to the company’s prestige as an education provider but also to how its model works as an entrepreneurial venture. Having such an extensive network means that other franchisees have tried, tested, and thrived together with Kumon.

Learning opportunities for franchisees

While a passion for education is a prerequisite for entering this kind of business, so too is having an entrepreneurial spirit and mindset. And Kumon knows this, which is why new franchisees aren’t left to their own devices but are guided step by step.

Before becoming a full-fledged Kumon instructor-franchisee, the brand requires applicants to undergo thorough training that includes strategies for owning and operating an educational business. They even help you determine ideal locations for your Kumon center.

The learning doesn’t stop there as Kumon also provides further training down the line to help business owners adapt to new challenges and platforms.

Adaptability

Speaking of adapting to new challenges, when the pandemic hit, Kumon wasn’t exempted from difficulties brought about by lockdown restrictions. But that didn’t stop the brand from continuing its mission. Kumon educators quickly assessed the situation and adapted by creating hybrid setups both for instructors and their students so the learning never stops.

Becoming part of the Kumon network

As an educational franchise, Kumon Philippines does screen its franchisees before doing business with them. But don’t worry, it’s not as intimidating as it sounds.

Here are some of the requirements:

  • College or university graduate
  • Have good Math and English skills (an examination is given on the date of the orientation)
  • Between 25 – 45 years of age
  • Enthusiastic to help children
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills (interview required)
  • Willingness to commit full-time to Kumon
  • Holds a Filipino Citizenship

Here’s how Kumon franchises are adapting to the times for greater success

belleperez

MANILA, Philippines — When SARS-CoV-2 hit in 2020, businesses and business franchises scrambled to find a foothold. What followed was a period of careful adaptation.

Health policies were put in place and businesses had become more open to remote work and hybrid setups. Many had also turned to technology and began digitalizing their operations. These measures had become part of what is known as the new normal.

Kumon, a leading education franchise here and abroad, was one such business that pivoted and adapted to the new normal.

Embracing innovation and digital transformation, Kumon franchises were quick on their feet to employ novel measures to their franchise recruitment and application processes, which in turn helped maintain their success.

More specifically, Kumon Philippines, Inc. (KPI) had shifted to online franchise recruitment—which was previously done face-to-face, including orientations and consultations, before the pandemic.

It didn’t stop there. Although orientations were already done online through scheduled Zoom or Skype meetings, Kumon made it even more convenient for franchise applicants. It then began utilizing recordings of its franchise orientation video so that applicants can just watch it from home at their convenience.

Why franchise with Kumon?

A good benchmark for an evergreen business lies in steady demand. This is why there are industries that thrive because they help sustain society at any given time—and the education sector is one of them.

As an education franchise, Kumon has, over the years, positioned itself as an institution of credibility and profitability.

The franchise giant is in it for the long game, helping its franchisees achieve three things: career and personal growth and opportunity, business incentives and continuous training and support. It is a step ahead on training its franchisees, having switched these processes online as well.

Kumon never lags on convenience and accessibility as all trainings have also shifted online and hosted by KPI to ready the applicant in opening their own Kumon Center.

Aside from learning the Kumon Method, Kumon will also facilitate learning about center management, marketing instruction and all other aspects of business so that every step of the way, franchisees are well-equipped in managing their center at their best.

What’s more, Kumon Franchisee-Instructors get the chance to learn with like-minded individuals and hone their teaching skills through local and international training.

Worldwide repute

As the world’s leading educational franchise with 60 years under its belt, Kumon continues to reap success and give inspiration to business owners, learners and educators alike.

From its humble beginnings in Japan in 1958 with Toru Kumon and his passion for methodical and lifelong learning, Kumon has transformed into the household name it is today, having taught millions of students in 65 countries globally.

In the Philippines alone, the franchise has built over 300 centers and honed the skills of thousands of students across the country since 1996.

In the business of education: 4 questions to ask before franchising

belleperez

MANILA, Philippines — Education is something that Filipino families prioritize and uphold, knowing that it is the key to a brighter future. So to give their children the best possible early advantage in life, some parents would even enroll their children in advanced classes and other activities outside school.

This profound appreciation of Filipinos for education stirs a consistent demand for education-related services—making it an appealing venture for business-minded individuals.

When entering the education sector, owning and running an education franchise is very promising indeed. Franchising an already recognized name in the education sector can give aspiring entrepreneurs the advantage of an already loyal customer base, which leads to faster growth.

But like in any other business, there are things to consider when figuring out what education franchise will work. Here are a few questions to ask before venturing into it:

  1. What is the franchise’s reputation in the industry?

In the education industry, a credible name is highly essential, and credibility is built on trust from clients, parents, and franchisees. If a company’s credibility is tainted, it would be hard to gain the trust of potential customers and prospective partners.

In the Philippines, Kumon is one of the most well-established education franchises. With over 300 centers in just 25 years, the brand has undeniably made a name for itself and gained the trust of Filipino families.

Additionally, Kumon, the world’s largest education franchise, has supported children’s academic development for over 60 years while supporting the business growth of its growing number of franchisees in the Philippines and globally.

  1. How did it rise from the pandemic?

The pandemic was a litmus test for the ability of businesses to adapt and innovate, and educator services are not exempt from this.

A sign of a good education franchise is its ability to learn lessons from challenges—and use these lessons to future-proof the business.

By now, a business should have been able to migrate and streamline its process online, such as its recruitment.

Additionally, education franchises should already be able to transform their traditional offices into hybrid setups to maximize opportunities and offer more services online and offline—such as what Kumon does with its hybrid study model.

Kumon’s model combines the best use of both conventional classroom and home-based online learning, proving that no matter where the learning takes place—be it in centers or at home—the abilities of children, as well as its franchisees, can still be developed at maximum.

  1. Profits aside, what’s in it for you?

Delivering best-in-class education to children and helping them achieve their dreams is a passion that should be shared by the education sector.

A good education franchise goes beyond financial satisfaction and enables you to pursue your interests and passions. It should provide a culture and environment where you can approach your business with a sense of mission to enrich the lives of students.

In Kumon, for example, franchisee-instructors can work on their passions, while getting personal development and career advancement through different exposures inside and outside the country. All these while they get a sense of accomplishment as they build the dreams and potentials of their students.

  1. How’s the support system for franchisees?

For a franchise to thrive, there needs a solid partnership between franchisor and franchisee, and a dynamic network among franchisees that would allow for mutual growth.

Through these relationships, a new franchise could learn the must-knows in growing a business and maximizing its potential.

Kumon guarantees its franchisee-instructors of support in all their journey of franchising—from planning and establishing centers to the maintenance of services.

Because Kumon has an established name in the business, it facilitates comprehensive, hands-on trainings for franchisee-instructors before and after the opening of each Kumon Center, to ensure the quality of their services across its network.

Additionally, Kumon knows that every franchisee has a lot to take care of in managing a business, which is why it offers marketing support and assists every franchisee in promoting their business so they could focus their efforts on other important operational matters.

Apart from regular visits and assistance by office staff to the Center, Kumon also provides franchisees with monthly seminars and lots of exposure from local and overseas conferences. This helps equip franchisees with insights and industry knowledge that would help them provide clients with top-notch services and keep up with the ever-changing business landscape.

Kumon: A household name for a reason

For over 60 years, Kumon has impacted over 4 million children in 50 countries. Today, in these pandemic times, it continues to go above and beyond to reach as many students.

One to credit for this is the globally-appreciated Kumon Method of Learning, an individualized learning method for Math and Reading that pursues the potential of each child and develops their ability to the maximum.

Kumon has also proven to its clients and franchisees its credibility and profitability as a business education partner—which has made it last for six decades and counting.

From being flexible and adaptive amidst changes in the business landscape, to constantly providing franchisees with support and a greater sense of mission in the community, Kumon has become a household name in education franchising for all the right reasons.

Kumon Philippines celebrates 25 Years of Nurturing the Love for Learning

belleperez

Kumon was born out of a father’s love for his son. In fact, what started as a loving father’s idea of creating learning materials to help his son develop strong calculation skills has turned into a learning method that has helped pursue the potential of students around the world, especially in the Philippines.

In 1954, Mr. Toru Kumon developed the Kumon Program so that his son, Takeshi, could develop the needed skills and abilities to study mathematics with ease. From studying his son’s school materials, he found out that these materials progressed too quickly from one topic to the next. He decided to design his own materials to help his son develop strong calculation skills.

The success of the program was more than what he expected since Takeshi was able to solve problems in differential and integral calculus by sixth grade.

The first-ever Kumon Center was Mr. Toru Kumon’s home.

Considering Takeshi’s evident development and firm in his belief that what was possible for one child is possible for others, Mr. Toru Kumon set out to offer his learning method to as many children as possible – this has become known as the kindness movement. It was a mission he set out to pursue. This also started the growth of the Kumon Method in Japan as the Kumon Institute of Education was established in Osaka, Japan in 1958 with 300 students in 13 Centers.

Kumon reached the Philippines in 1982 as the need for a supplemental learning program that develops students’ academic skills and character increased. The first Kumon Center was opened and handled by a Japanese instructor. As the number of Centers started to increase, Kumon Philippines was formally established on August 15, 1996. Since then, the method has been growing in the country with three branch offices in Makati City, Quezon City, and Cebu City that supports more than 300 Centers and 45,000 students nationwide.

As the company celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2021, Kumon Philippines is happy to share one of its first surprises for the year: The Online New Student Promo Triple Treat.

Is Remote Learning Getting to You? Help Your Children Develop Self-Learning!

belleperez

With most parents having to facilitate their children’s remote learning at home, it can get tedious and sometimes even ineffective—after all, everyone is still adjusting. But one way to make this beneficial for your children is to hone the skill of self-learning. So if you haven’t already started, here are five strategies you can try at home:

Identify learning goals

Is Remote Learning Getting to You? Help Your Children Develop Self-Learning!

Before your children jump to a new lesson, help them identify their learning goals from the beginning. With these things in mind, your children will know what they need to understand and pick up from their lessons.

Don’t forget to encourage them to reach these goals as they go about their lessons. Once they tick off one thing from the list, congratulate them so that they feel they accomplished something—and know that they are on the right track.

Go through an example with them

Is Remote Learning Getting to You? Help Your Children Develop Self-Learning!

Children, no matter how intelligent and self-learned, will need to learn through examples first. When your children come across a particular problem, walk through it with them so they can see and understand how to tackle it. Be patient until they can keep the steps in mind and do it on their own; be their training wheels.

Use real-life situations

Is Remote Learning Getting to You? Help Your Children Develop Self-Learning!

When you see that your children are getting the hang of a lesson, whether that’s addition or fractions, try to incorporate these into real situations you experience daily. At the end of the day, you can ask them how many minutes they spend before bed if they schedule 20 minutes of TV time and 5 minutes for getting ready for bed? Or, before cutting through a cake, ask how many pieces they would need to cut in order to feed the entire family for two days.

Encourage questions

Is Remote Learning Getting to You? Help Your Children Develop Self-Learning!

It should come as no surprise that your children are likely to ask questions beyond the coverage of their books and their teacher’s lesson plans. In these instances, do not brush them off, as doing so will discourage their inquisitive nature. Asking questions—no matter the subject and whom it is directed at—is proof that your children are aware that their lessons cover more than exams and activity sheets.

Provide them with the necessary tools

All these things said, as a parent, you need to provide your children with all the tools they’ll need to practice self-learning. This means having papers, pencils, and access to required study lessons ready and at hand. It also means providing more challenging problems once your children master what is required of them. Their learning, because of the additional material, never stops.

The limits of education will cease to exist once you encourage your children to self-learn. So, maximize remote learning and other learning opportunities to support their continuous learning journey.

4 Ways To Guide Your Children Toward Self-Learning

belleperez
After almost a year of enforced quarantine restrictions, we are still unsure when it will be safe for children to go back to the traditional school setup. Fortunately, public and private institutions have helped make remote learning a possibility.Yet, while the new normal has made everyone more agile and flexible, there are still learning curves to overcome — with one being self-learning.Self-learning is when children grasp and understand concepts, put their lessons into practice to solve a problem, and retain information — all on their own. It is a skill they can use in school and in other activities. Here are a few key practices parents can do to help children develop and practice this skill on a daily basis.

Be present but don’t hover

Everyone needs a place to begin, and this is where you can be hands-on with your children. As they start on a new lesson or chapter in their book, don’t hesitate to be there with them through the first exercises to ensure they’re following the steps and can handle it on their own.

But when you see your kids getting the hang of it, let them proceed on their own. Avoid hovering or being a “helicopter parent.” Instead, encourage them to get their feet wet in the lessons.

Have open conversations about learning

Children are naturally inquisitive, so it’s important not to deter their innate curiosity and excitement. When they pick up a new lesson, let them talk about it openly without dismissing it because you’ve known the topic for years. Express your happiness and try to match their enthusiasm.

At the same time, let your kids come to you when they need help. If they’re having difficulty with a particular task, ask questions about the learning process as well as the material itself. Ask your children about what makes it hard and what they think they need in order to really understand the lesson. Sometimes, it’s as simple as reviewing earlier lessons or introducing a new way to approach things.

Ignite kids’ competitive side

If your children are the kind of students who are a little more competitive and react well to incentives, use this to their learning advantage.

Much like how schools do it, try to put a timer when they have a task to accomplish and provide them with a little reward when they’re successful. This will motivate them to focus and work on what’s required instead of getting distracted.

Establish a learning area

One particular difficulty that students are still continuing to overcome is distinguishing the difference between home life and study life. While the house and the school used to draw this line very distinctly, quarantine protocols make it difficult to be so literal.

Instead, have a designated area for study time. If space is an issue, have easy-to-move-around items that make this division possible — such as desks facing away from each other and from the television.

Given the uncertainty of returning to the traditional school setting, it is time to start providing children with a way to learn and develop skills that will help them in the long run. After all, the ability to self-learn will always come in handy in school and in their future endeavors.

Learning never stops — even in Kumon. As a supplementary learning program, Kumon has helped generations of students develop academic skills and character.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Kumon is offering the Online New Student Promo Triple Treat, which includes a free registration fee worth PHP500 and a free Kumon bag, when you register from January 21 to February 28, 2021.
