For over 25 years, Teacher Marilou Perez has been a pillar of learning and inspiration in the city of Baguio. As the Instructor of the Kumon Baguio Study Center, her journey is one of resilience, growth, and unwavering dedication to helping children succeed.
A Calling to Help Children
Before Kumon, Teacher Marilou dedicated 15 years of her life to teaching at an international school in Baguio, focusing on Math and Science while occasionally teaching English and History. "I knew then the many struggles children go through," she shares. "So, I wanted to find a way to make it easier for them to cope."
During a break from full-time teaching, a Kumon parent from Manila encouraged her to apply as an Instructor. Despite concerns about logistics and the challenges of establishing a Center in North Luzon, she felt a deep sense of urgency to help children in her area. "I said I was willing to try, and the rest, as they say, is history."
Her Center began as an experimental one, but her dedication paved the way for its success. "It was the first Kumon Center in North Luzon, and though it was a big leap into the unknown, I knew it was where I was meant to be."
Overcoming Early Challenges
Teacher Marilou's early years as a Kumon Instructor were far from easy. "The teaching part wasn't a big concern, but the logistics were tough," she recalls. "Traveling from Baguio to Manila for training took 6 to 8 hours, as there were no expressways back then. I would leave Baguio at 3 AM, attend the training, and head back the same day, eating my meals in the car."
Despite these hurdles, Teacher Marilou persevered. "Each day summoned a new beginning. I am not the same teacher Marilou as I was before. Over the years, I've learned to guide and minister to the unique needs of each child, support their struggles, and adapt to meet their diverse learning styles."
Finding Joy and Motivation in the Journey
What keeps Teacher Marilou inspired after all these years? It's the students. "Seeing them visibly grow and reach heights they thought were impossible is the greatest reward," she shares.
One of her most memorable experiences was working with children with special needs. "These children struggled, cried, and sometimes wanted to quit, but they stayed on and thrived through the Kumon Program. It affirmed my belief that every child is gifted with potential, and even in the face of difficulties, they are capable of learning."
Another deeply rewarding experience is when former students return to thank her. "Many have come back, sometimes with their parents, to express their gratitude. One of the most heartwarming moments is when older students bring their own children to enroll at Kumon. It's a clear sign that we must have done something good."
A Message for the Future
"Always include God in the equation. Teaching is not just a job – it's a calling. It's about making an impact in the lives of students and investing your life in theirs. Stay open to growth, be kind and compassionate, and never stop learning. Above all, be grateful for the privilege of guiding these children, knowing that every moment you spend with them shapes their future."
