How parents can help their kids with remote learning

It appears that this new educational system is here to stay. The question now is, how can parents help their children with distance learning?

When the health crisis first hit and schools started to close their doors, a lot of questions were asked. Parents and teachers were caught off-guard and had numerous concerns about the only available option: online distance learning.

1. Is our home prepared?

But what were the lessons we learned from online distance learning, anyway? Here are five of the biggest realizations that no one will soon forget.

Lesson 1: Learning does not end when class does.

So, is there a way we can read at a faster rate? The answer is, yes. Speed reading is not “skip reading,” but a beneficial reading method when done correctly.

Here are 5 tips to read faster without losing your comprehension on the subject matter:

 

1. Preview the text first.

Skim and scan the entire text, and look for important headings and sub-headings to give you an initial idea of the overall topic. This helps you quickly gain an understanding of what the text is before actually reading it in detail. Skimming and scanning are techniques that help you familiarize yourself with the main parts of the text, and are best applied when reading non-fiction to get you straight to the facts.

 

2. Read in chunks.

As little children, we started by reading word by word until we developed our reading skills into understanding sentences and, eventually, paragraphs. It is good to use your peripheral vision when viewing texts to catch more words with one reading. Rather than reading word by word, try reading three to five words at once by moving your eyes in a scanning motion. You’ll be surprised that you are now able to increase your reading speed through this practice.

 

3. Minimize re-reading texts repeatedly.

Make it a point to comprehend the texts right away whenever your eyes pass by them. Going back to the sentences or paragraphs you have previously read because you forgot what they meant could lengthen your reading time. This would not be beneficial as there will be a tendency to mix up the topics and timeline in your head. Break this habit by passing by each sentence and fully comprehending its meaning to avoid re-reading.

 

4. Increase and improve your vocabulary.

Improving your vocabulary increases your reading speed since you are more familiar with the words and their meanings. You wouldn’t have to consult a dictionary every time you encounter an unfamiliar word. Thus, giving you faster reading times. Kumon Philippines celebrates 25 Years of Nurturing the Love for Learning

Kumon was born out of a father’s love for his son. In fact, what started as a loving father’s idea of creating learning materials to help his son develop strong calculation skills has turned into a learning method that has helped pursue the potential of students around the world, especially in the Philippines.

 

 

In 1954, Mr. Toru Kumon developed the Kumon Program so that his son, Takeshi, could develop the needed skills and abilities to study mathematics with ease. From studying his son’s school materials, he found out that these materials progressed too quickly from one topic to the next. He decided to design his own materials to help his son develop strong calculation skills.

The success of the program was more than what he expected since Takeshi was able to solve problems in differential and integral calculus by sixth grade.

 

The first-ever Kumon Center was Mr. Toru Kumon’s home.

 

Considering Takeshi’s evident development and firm in his belief that what was possible for one child is possible for others, Mr. Toru Kumon set out to offer his learning method to as many children as possible – this has become known as the kindness movement. It was a mission he set out to pursue. This also started the growth of the Kumon Method in Japan as the Kumon Institute of Education was established in Osaka, Japan in 1958 with 300 students in 13 Centers.

Kumon reached the Philippines in 1982 as the need for a supplemental learning program that develops students’ academic skills and character increased. The first Kumon Center was opened and handled by a Japanese instructor. As the number of Centers started to increase, Kumon Philippines was formally established on August 15, 1996. Be present but don’t hover

If your children are the kind of students who are a little more competitive and react well to incentives, use this to their learning advantage.

Much like how schools do it, try to put a timer when they have a task to accomplish and provide them with a little reward when they’re successful. This will motivate them to focus and work on what’s required instead of getting distracted.

Establish a learning area

One particular difficulty that students are still continuing to overcome is distinguishing the difference between home life and study life. While the house and the school used to draw this line very distinctly, quarantine protocols make it difficult to be so literal.

Instead, have a designated area for study time. If space is an issue, have easy-to-move-around items that make this division possible — such as desks facing away from each other and from the television.

Given the uncertainty of returning to the traditional school setting, it is time to start providing children with a way to learn and develop skills that will help them in the long run. After all, the ability to self-learn will always come in handy in school and in their future endeavors.
